Staff Development/Training

The Staff Development/Training officer is a probation officer on special assignment.  They are primarily responsible for organizing training for the Department.  They also are involved in many collateral duties assigned by management, such as becoming a trainer on various topics and meeting with other law enforcement agencies within the community on training matters.  All new employees are involved with a Department orientation and then depending on their job, specialized training.  For example, a probation officer in their first year will have completed over 80 hours of internal training regarding policy and procedure.  They will also attend the Probation Officer Certification Academy for two weeks.  If they work in Intensive probation, they will attend a separate week long training.  They will also attend a week long Defensive Tactics course and a week long Firearms Academy (if they choose to be armed).  The Department attempts to model our internal training on a practical skills approach, meaning what skills are important and need to be emphasized such as safety training, communication skills, and practical skills, such as drug recognition, etc.  The Department is currently emphasizing Evidence Base Programs (EBP), which means doing things the way that have proven to be effective and successful, not programs or methods that have been done for years without the most effective result.
